Saying goodbye to the horses they love has become a way of life for Marley and her sisters, who train and sell show jumpers to make their living. Marley has grand ambitions to jump in Pony of the Year, but every good pony she’s ever had has been sold out from under her to pay the bills.
Then a half-wild pinto pony comes into her life, and Marley finds that this most unlikely of champions could be the superstar she has always dreamed of. As Marley and Cruise rise quickly to the top of their sport, it seems as though her dreams of winning the Pony of the Year might come true after all.
But her family is struggling to make ends meet, and as the countdown to Pony of the Year begins, Marley is forced to face the possibility of losing the pony she has come to love more than anything else in the world.
Can Marley save the farm she loves, without sacrificing the pony she can’t live without?

Being of the older generation, I can not believe how I fell into this book.. hook line and sinker. I mean, I am a horse person before most other things and had horses most of my life. That often makes me more picky rather than less but this books characters just came in and stole my heart away. As soon as I finished, I was looking to see when "Dream On" would be coming out. See? Really hooked. The scene is New Zealand so some of the horsey words are unique which makes it more fun . The premise is a bit cheesy. Mom died, then eventually Dad dies leaving three sisters to run the horse and pony farm. Kris, at eighteen, is the eldest and also the legal guardian for Marly , fifteen ,who is the youngest and still in High School. Van is miss in-between..Slowly but surely the money left by the death of their father is running out and the three young ladies are having a very hard time holding the farm together. Their job now is to take in horses or ponies that are problems and try to re make them into show quality animals. Then sell them at a decent profit. Hard scramble living to be sure.
The story surrounds a six year old pinto pony that came from a farm up the road when the owner died suddenly and his nephew found him running lose and pretty much unbroken in the back pasture. They named him Cruise Control and Marley went to work to see what she could make of him. To her surprise, he seemed to be a marvelous fellow. At least he hadn't been ruined like so many of the animals they got, so he was a clean slate and a happy learner. The bond that Marley and Cruise develop is the center of the story. Interestingly enough, the author based this on a true story of a friend and her horse.
I like the fact that all the characters are strongly drawn and you can understand a lot of the motivation about some of the bad things that happen. The story pulls from the good things and through the bad things ( which there seem to be plenty of) and some of the more realistic things that can happen with horses and people. The end is well rounded and honest in that we do often have to sacrifice in order to grow up and do the right things. It is a great tale and I really loved it and can't wait for the next one out!

Dare to Dream eBook Kate Lattey Reviews
Dare to Dream is truly a horse-lover's novel! From page one through the end of this book, the equine adventures never quit - whether they involve riding bareback & barefoot to the local pond for a swim, the view from the back of a pony galloping through the show jumping arena, or the every day details of loving & caring for horses. But, what I loved most about this book is the characters Lattey created - especially the three main characters! The three main characters are the Carmichael sisters - Marley, Van & Kris. All three are strong, spunky, hard-working, truly passionate girls. And, even though they face hard times and massive debt, they preserver and stick together, fighting for what they love - each other and their horses. Seriously, I want to be the fourth Carmichael sister! That's how much I enjoyed these characters ... looking forward to reading the sequel. )

These are the books I've been waiting for since the Pullein-Thompson sisters hung up their collective hooves and wrote shorter, less engaging fare post 1970. I craved more Ruby Ferguson, I needed new Jill. I have nearly every quality horse book ever written (not the Saddle Club style ones with boys, ice cream and very little riding) and was in despair. Then along came Jane Badger's review of Kate Lattey. I took a risk AND BOY has it paid off! Kate is not only a supersonic writer, she creates real characters and horses, ones that hook you from the first page and invite you into their home from the word go. I'm in that kitchen, I'm thinking about Marley's carrot cake, I'm at every show (plenty of riding is what horse books need and these have PLENTY!) and I'm in love with the horses, the ponies and all the characters. There's no rubbish, corny romance for the sake of it. You will cry. DO NOT miss out on these books, I'm certainly going to read all the others and I know I've something amazing worth waiting for ... (read Kate's wonderful blog http//nzponywriter.com/tag/kate-lattey/ and join her Facebook page https//www.facebook.com/kate.lattey?fref=ts - she is very likeable indeed). Thank you Kate!
There are always two parts to a good horse story--the people and the horses. Sometimes authors get the horses right and Kate Lattey definitely knows horses. All the details are spot on. The book is set in New Zealand, which readers will figure out pretty fast because many of the horse terms are different than those used in the U.S. I always find it fun to read the different lingo!
But for me, it was the people that made this book shine. The relationship and dynamic between the three sisters is filled with warmth, humor, and truth. Kris, Van, and Marley are trying to make a go of training jumpers after their parents died. They are scrambling to make ends meet and the youngest, Marley, must face adult concerns. Unlike many of the kids she competes against, Marley must sell the ponies she trains in order to help her family. She hopes that her newest pony, Cruise, won't have talent and then she'll be able to keep him--but he turns out to be very talented.
The power of this book is the the way the girls support and love each other, but in a realistic way that is not all lovey-dovey. The horse part also doesn't turn out all perfectly, which while sad, felt right. Horses bring lots of joy, but also lots of heartache. In the end, family is most important--which Marley learns firsthand.
I recommend this book for all horse-lovers, although it will certainly appeal most to tween and teen readers.
